For glacier hikes a guide is mandatory. For multi-day treks a guide takes care of huts, transport, river crossings and weather decisions, which is worth a lot if it is your first time in the Icelandic highlands. Many marked day hikes are easy to do on your own.
Yes. Most popular trails are well marked in summer. Self-guided packages are available that pre-book huts, luggage transfers and buses while you hike independently.
As early as possible. Hut bookings for the following summer usually open in winter, and peak-season dates in July and August often sell out quickly. Camping next to the huts is a flexible fallback.
