The Eldborg crater hike is an easy walk to one of the most symmetrical volcanic craters in Iceland, rising from the lava plain at the base of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. The out-and-back route is 6 km and takes 1.5–2 hours, with about 100 m of total ascent and a highest point of about 100 m. It is flat for most of the way, with a short, steeper climb at the end.

Eldborg is an elongated, steep-sided crater that fed the surrounding lava field, now covered in moss, heather and low birch scrub. From the rim you look into the crater's bowl and across the lava to the mountains of Snæfellsnes and the coast. It is a protected natural monument, so stay on the path. Because it is quick and simple, it makes an easy stop when driving to or from the peninsula.

Highlights

  • A steep, symmetrical crater rim above flat lava plains
  • Moss, heather and birch scrub across the old lava field
  • Views to the Snæfellsnes mountains and the coast
  • Short, easy walk suitable for families

The route

Across the lava field

The trail leaves the trailhead near the farm and heads across the lava plain. The path is mostly flat, winding through low birch, heather and moss-covered lava. It can be wet in places after rain. Eldborg's distinctive shape is visible ahead almost the whole time.

Climb to the crater rim

At the foot of the crater, a short steep path climbs to the rim. The slope is loose scoria, so take care. From the top you look into the steep-walled crater and over the lava field it produced. Do not walk around the rim edges beyond the path; erosion damages the crater. Return the same way.

Getting to the trailhead

Eldborg lies just off Route 54, the main road into Snæfellsnes, roughly 1.5 hours from Reykjavík via Borgarnes. Look for the signed turn and gravel road to the trailhead parking near the farm. There is no public transport to the trailhead, so you will need a car.

Where to stay

Borgarnes, about 35–45 minutes away, has hotels, guesthouses and a campsite. If you are heading on to Snæfellsnes, there are guesthouses and farm stays along Route 54 and in towns like Stykkishólmur, Grundarfjörður and Arnarstapi.

Best time to hike

The walk is possible all year. Summer brings long days and green moss and heather. In winter the path can be icy, especially the climb up the crater, and daylight is short, but the snow-dusted crater is striking.

Safety

This is a low-risk walk, but the climb to the rim is steep and loose, and the rim is exposed to wind. Keep back from the crater edge and stay on the path to protect the fragile slopes. In winter, use microspikes for the icy climb. Check the forecast and SafeTravel.is, and call 112 in an emergency.
