The Úlfarsfell hike is one of the easiest mountain walks in the Reykjavík area of Iceland, rising on the boundary between eastern Reykjavík and Mosfellsbær. The out-and-back route is 2.5 km, takes about 60 minutes and involves around 160 m of ascent, reaching a highest point of about 295 m. It is a short, simple walk on a clear path, popular with families and runners.

Despite its modest height, Úlfarsfell gives a broad view over the capital, the bays, Mount Esja and on clear days across to Snæfellsjökull. It is a good choice for a first hike in Iceland, a short outing on arrival or an evening walk in summer. In winter it remains popular, though the path can be icy. Do not expect wilderness here; it is a local favourite on the edge of the city.

Highlights

  • Views over Reykjavík, Esja and the bays
  • Short and easy, suitable for most
  • Close to the city
  • Good evening or winter outing

The route

Up the slope

From the trailhead on the Úlfarsárdalur side the path climbs steadily over grassy and gravelly slopes. It is clear and well used, and the gradient is gentle to moderate. Views over the eastern suburbs and Esja open up as you climb.

Summit and back

The top is a broad, open plateau with wide views across the capital area, the bays and, on clear days, as far as Snæfellsjökull. Take some time to look around and pick out landmarks, then return the same way. The descent is easy but can be slippery when wet or icy.

Getting to the trailhead

Úlfarsfell lies on the eastern edge of Reykjavík, close to the Úlfarsárdalur neighbourhood and Mosfellsbær. Several paths lead up the mountain; this route starts on the Úlfarsárdalur side, where there is parking near the trailhead. It is about 20 minutes' drive from central Reykjavík.

Where to stay

Úlfarsfell is an easy outing from anywhere in Reykjavík or Mosfellsbær, so there is no need to stay nearby. Both offer a wide range of hotels, guesthouses and restaurants, and the city's geothermal pools make a good finish.

Best time to hike

Úlfarsfell can be hiked year-round. Summer gives long evenings and green slopes. In winter, short days and icy paths call for care, but on a clear, still day the views over a snowy city are excellent.

Safety

This is a low-risk walk, but wind can be strong on the top and the path gets icy in winter, so bring layers and consider microspikes from November to March. Check the forecast before you go. In an emergency call 112, and see SafeTravel.is for weather warnings.
