Landmannalaugar: Grænagil Canyon
Grænagil
A short 4 km loop from the Landmannalaugar hut through obsidian lava into the green-tinted walls of Grænagil canyon.

- Distance
- 4 km
- Loop
- Time
- 1–1.5 hours
- Ascent
- 150 m
- Max 700 m
- Difficulty
- Easy
The Grænagil hike is the easiest walk in Landmannalaugar, the rhyolite mountain area in Iceland's southern highlands. The loop is 4 km and takes 1–1.5 hours, with 150 m of ascent and a high point of 700 m. It is a good first outing after arriving, or a short walk for anyone not up for the bigger peaks. It also makes a good evening stroll.
The route crosses part of the Laugahraun lava field, with black obsidian glinting along the path, and then follows the narrow Grænagil canyon, where the rock walls take on green and orange tones. It returns past the base of the surrounding hills to the hut area. Paths are clear and mostly gentle, with a few short climbs. Allow time to stop for photos.
Highlights
- Green and orange rock walls in Grænagil canyon
- Black obsidian in the Laugahraun lava field
- Close-up views of Bláhnúkur and the rhyolite hills
- Short enough to combine with the hot spring at the hut
The route
Through Laugahraun
From the hut area the path leads into the Laugahraun lava field. The trail winds between jagged blocks of lava, with shiny black obsidian scattered along the way. It climbs gently and gives good views back over the hut area and the river plains.
Grænagil canyon and back
The path then enters Grænagil, a narrow canyon with green-tinted walls, contrasting with the orange and grey slopes above. The route loops back toward the hut along the base of the hills. The ground is easy, though it can be muddy or icy early in the season.
Getting to the trailhead
Landmannalaugar is reached on highland roads F208 or F225, which require a 4x4 and are open only in summer. The final approach to the hut involves a river ford; many park before it and walk across the footbridge. Summer highland buses also run from Reykjavík. Check road.is for road openings and conditions.
Where to stay
Ferðafélag Íslands (FÍ) runs the hut and campsite at Landmannalaugar. Hut bunks must be booked well in advance in summer; the campsite is more flexible but exposed to wind. Other accommodation is limited to highland lodges some distance away.
Best time to hike
The trail is accessible in July, August and September, when highland roads are open. July and August are best for weather and access. September is quieter but colder, with more chance of early snow.
Safety
Although easy, this is still a highland walk: weather changes quickly, so bring waterproofs and warm layers. Obsidian is sharp, so take care if you fall. Stay on marked paths to protect fragile moss and rhyolite slopes. Check vedur.is and SafeTravel.is, and call 112 in an emergency.
