The Skaftafell glacier trail is the easiest way to get close to a glacier in Iceland. This loop from the Skaftafell visitor centre to the edge of Skaftafellsjökull is 4 km and takes 1–1.5 hours, with about 80 m of ascent and a highest point of just 130 m. It is a simple, well-made path suitable for most visitors, including children.
The trail crosses gravel plains and moraine to a viewpoint near the glacier front, where the ice descends from Vatnajökull, the largest ice cap in Iceland. Markers along the way show where the glacier used to reach, a clear illustration of how fast it has retreated. The path ends near the meltwater lagoon at the foot of the ice. It is a short, sobering lesson in climate change.
Highlights
- Close views of the Skaftafellsjökull glacier tongue
- Signs showing how far the glacier has retreated
- Moraines and meltwater lagoon at the glacier front
- Easy, family-friendly path from the visitor centre
The route
Visitor centre to the moraines
From the Skaftafell visitor centre, the trail heads east over flat gravel and through scrub toward the glacier. The path is clear and mostly level. As you approach, moraine ridges and the glacier tongue come into view. The light grey gravel underfoot was laid down by meltwater from the glacier.
Glacier viewpoint and back
The trail ends at a viewpoint near the glacier front and its meltwater lagoon. Do not walk on the ice or approach the edge of the lagoon. The loop then leads back to the visitor centre. Ice blocks often float in the lagoon, and the glacier surface is streaked with ash and grit.
Getting to the trailhead
Skaftafell is on Route 1, about 4.5 hours' drive from Reykjavík and around 2 hours west of Höfn. The trail starts at the Skaftafell visitor centre, which has a large car park with parking fees. Long-distance buses have stopped at Skaftafell in summer; check current schedules.
Where to stay
Skaftafell has a large campsite by the visitor centre. Hotels and guesthouses are spread along Route 1 nearby, but options are limited and book up quickly in summer. Book well ahead for July and August.
Best time to hike
The trail is open all year. Summer brings long days and easy walking. In winter, the path can be icy and daylight is short, but the glacier is often striking under snow. Spring and autumn are quieter and still easy.
Safety
Never walk on the glacier without a certified guide and proper equipment; crevasses and collapsing ice are real dangers. Keep away from the lagoon edge, where ice can calve. In winter, paths can be icy. Check vedur.is and SafeTravel.is before setting out, and call 112 in an emergency.
